Acupuncture is the ancient Asian art of inserting and manipulating thin needles into prescribed focal points of the body in order to enhance health or treat a variety of illnesses and symptoms. Acupuncture has been shown to improve vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes that can occur with natural or breast cancer treatment induced menopause. Chemotherapy can produce profound nausea and vomiting and fatigue, and acupuncture has been found to be helpful. In breast cancer patients getting an aromatase inhibitor as part of their treatment, acupuncture can relieve the symptoms of bone and joint discomfort. There is even a suggested benefit with acupuncture to women who suffer from post-surgical lymphedema. Acupuncture is used to treat a whole catalogue of other maladies, most notably chronic pain.
