Dr. Melita Charles earned her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, graduating with distinction in research. She completed a general surgical residency at Long Island Jewish Hospital, followed by a surgical oncology fellowship at the prestigious Roswell Park Cancer Institute, where she was a National Institutes of Health research fellow in the Department of Cancer Genetics. She was Director of Breast Surgery and Chairperson of the Cancer Committee at Nassau University Medical Center until 2004, then joined the faculty of Long Island College Hospital, where she practiced until 2013. She has served as an American Cancer Society Liaison at both Long Island College Hospital and Nassau University Medical Center. During her career, she has published and presented research on cell, molecular, and genetic alterations in breast, thyroid, and prostate cancers. She is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She joined the Ashikari Breast Center in 2013.
